Job Fairs…. Seriously?!
This past week alone, I read or heard about several job fairs around the area. One article I read featured an outlet mall job fair, thousands of attendees, and quite a few companies that were present to do “on-the-spot” interviews and hiring. This is great news!
The not so great news is that I was not impressed about how some of the attendees were dressed. It was obvious that many of the attendees did not prepare for the interview or dress to meet the recruiter. If I noticed, do you think the hiring managers and recruiters at the job fair noticed? This brings me to my next point… According to The Gazette, the businesses represented did not fill all of their open positions during the job fair!!! How could that be when thousands attended the job fair for approximately 900 job openings? Could it be the dress code??
Here are some simple tips to help you prepare for the next job fair:
Take Job Fairs Seriously! Consider it as an opportunity to interview with and impress several recruiters on the same day. It is a one stop shop for a job. Take full advantage of the opportunity when you attend.
Always be prepared and professionally dressed to market yourself to prospective employers. First impressions can be the difference between getting a job and being passed over.
Prepare and practice your 30 second commercial, which briefly tells potential employers who you are and how you would be beneficial to their business/company.
Lastly, and most importantly…
